Benefits to Staying Fit
14 January 2008
There’s now new motivation to hit the gym and kick unhealthy habits. PruHealth, a private medical insurer, is offering cash incentives to policyholders who wish to do one of three things: stop smoking, get fit, and eat healthier. This offer comes as those who wish to fulfil these three common resolutions take hold of the New Year with new-found zeal. The company awards participants “vitality” points for completing and continuing health and fitness regimes. These points add up and can transfer into cash deductions for future policies if no claims have been made on the policy.
PruHealth outlines its incentive based five step program:
Lose lbs, not £’s
PruHealth has linked up with LA Fitness, Cannons and Virgin Active to offer discounted gym memberships for its health insurance policyholders who go to the gym regularly. The more a policyholder goes to the gym, the less they pay for their membership.
Get Out, Get Active
PruHealth has teamed up with eBay’s sports department. Policyholders who buy certain fitness-related goods from the sports category on ebay.co.uk earn “vitality points” to help reduce future health insurance premiums if they don’t make a claim.
Kicking Old Habits
Smokers can attend the ‘Allen Carr’s EasyWay to Stop Smoking Programme’ for just £49, rather than the £220 retail price. Upon attendance, members will be required to pay a £100 administration cost, however this will be fully reimbursed by PruHealth. Members will also be awarded 150 “vitality points” for completion of the course.
Discounted Health Screening
Policyholders looking to start 2008 off fresh with a clean bill of health could be eligible for a health assessment session with one of PruHealth’s partners.
Eating Right
Healthy meals consist of five servings of fruit and vegetables per day. PruHealth has “healthy meal planners” available to download from their website if members are having trouble keeping up with the recommended daily servings. PruHealth’s members can also earn “vitality points” by buying fresh fruits and vegetables from Sainsbury’s.
For example, every £2 spent on a weekly fruit and vegetable, Sainsbury’s customers can earn PruHealth “vitality points” which can be accrued over the course of a year and offset against their health insurance premiums the following year, assuming no claims have been made.
